What is JEE Main?

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is a national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). As one of the most prominent engineering entrance exams in India, JEE Main serves as the gateway for admission into Undergraduate Engineering Programs (B.E./B.Tech) at National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It also serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, the exclusive entrance test for the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Each year, over a million candidates appear for the JEE Main, which is conducted in multiple sessions. The exam is renowned for its competitive nature and comprehensive syllabus, which covers Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from the 11th and 12th standards. Based on recent timelines, the registration for the first session of JEE Main 2026 is expected to commence in the final quarter of 2025.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidates must have passed their Class 12 or equivalent examination in the year 2024, 2025, or be appearing in 2026.
  • It is mandatory to have passed the qualifying examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, along with one of Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational subject.
  • There is no age limit for candidates to appear for the JEE Main exam.

JEE Main Exam Pattern & Syllabus 2025

Registration Process JEE Main

The JEE Main application process is entirely online.

  1. Registration: Visit the official NTA JEE Main website (jeemain.nta.nic.in) and register using a valid email ID and mobile number to generate an Application Number.
  2. Fill Application Form: Log in and fill in all personal, academic, and contact details.
  3. Upload Documents: Upload scanned copies of a recent passport-size photograph, signature, and other required documents as per the specified format.
  4. Pay Application Fee: Pay the registration fee online through the available payment gateways.
  5. Confirmation: Download and print the confirmation page for future reference.

A: A candidate can appear for the JEE Main exam for three consecutive years. The exam is conducted in multiple sessions (usually two or more) within a year, and a candidate can appear in all sessions. The best score obtained will be considered for ranking.

A: Yes, there is a negative marking scheme. For MCQs, 4 marks are awarded for a correct answer, and 1 mark is deducted for an incorrect answer. For numerical value questions, 4 marks are given for a correct answer, but there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.

A: A score above 200 out of 300 generally translates to a percentile of 99 or above, which is considered excellent for securing a seat in the top NITs and IIITs.

A: No, the JEE Main rank is calculated solely based on the score obtained in the examination. However, candidates must fulfill the Class 12 percentage criteria (typically 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile) for admission to IITs, NITs, and CFTIs.
